Baroque Violin

THE VIOLIN IN THE ARTICLE IS AVAILABLE FOR ANY TEST

The baroque violin represents a return to the origins of an instrument that, as early as the 17th and 18th centuries, had secured a central place in European music. I have always been fascinated by the history and evolution of this instrument; my mission is to bring the violin back to its original form, respecting the techniques and materials that made it unique and deeply rooted in the music of the time. Each baroque violin I craft is a unique piece, born from extreme attention to detail and a profound respect for tradition.

From the Soundbox to the Neck: Differences with the Modern Violin

The structure of the modern violin we know today derives from the baroque, but with several modifications over the centuries. The soundbox, in most cases, remains unchanged from 18th-century models, inspired by great luthiers like Stradivari and other masters. My choice for baroque violins is based on these models to respect the tradition and the warm, full-bodied sound that characterizes them.

The main difference between the baroque and modern violin lies in the neck, whose inclination, shape, and thickness are specifically adapted for the baroque repertoire. This thicker neck with a particular shape offers support to the left hand, facilitating the execution of baroque technique and allowing the violinist to achieve a stable and comfortable position.

The Internal Bass Bar and Soundpost: Elements that Define the Timbre

Another fundamental characteristic that distinguishes baroque violins is the configuration of the internal bass bar and soundpost. In modern violins, these elements have undergone changes in terms of positioning and dimensions to adapt to new repertoire requirements. In baroque violins, however, I maintain these characteristics in their original version to reproduce the characteristic and authentic timbre of the era.

The choice of materials and the thicknesses of the top and back are also designed to produce a sound that naturally responds to early repertoire. These details require a deep knowledge of lutherie techniques and a great respect for the baroque tradition, which I consider fundamental to offer a superior quality instrument.

The Vibrating String Length: Perfected Adaptability

One aspect I carefully consider in crafting my baroque violins is the vibrating string length. In baroque times, string lengths and proportions varied, allowing for multiple interpretations. However, for my instruments, I maintain the same measurement as modern violins. This approach allows musicians to transition from modern to baroque without having to readjust hand positioning, ensuring perfect intonation and optimal comfort.

A Unique Model for a Warm and Rich Sound

When I craft a baroque violin, I draw upon a model I consider my flagship: an original Guadagnini, created in the mid-18th century in Turin, which I have adapted to the baroque version. This model, initially made for a soloist of the Teatro alla Scala in modern form, is perfectly suited for my baroque violins due to its warm, rich sound capable of expressing the full complexity of the repertoire of the time.
